Anton Avis is a freelance double bassist. He has performed with Orchestras such as London Concertante, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, British Sinfonietta, Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra and St Paul's Sinfonia. In addition to this, he regularly works with a wide range of ensembles across the UK.

In addition to a wide range of orchestral engagements, Anton is a very keen chamber musician. He has played a number of works written for the bass. As well as this, he will often play cello chamber music parts on the double bass to expand the repetoire, opting to keep them at bass pitch to add a different and new colour.

Having studied under the tutelage of David Stark at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Anton graduated in 2025 with a First Class degree. His studies were very kindly supported by the Leverhulme Trust and the David and Philippa Seligman Foundation. In addition to this, he won the Ernest and Doris Haigh Memorial Award for "excellence, achievement and commitment to studies."

Currently, he is studying Orchestral Artistry at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in association with the London Symphony Orchestra. Here, he studies orchestral double bass playing under the guidance of Marco Behtash and Tim Gibbs. His studies are very kindly supported by a GSMD scholarship.

Anton is looking forward to playing the Beethoven 1st Piano Concerto at the Three Rivers Chamber Festival. It is an immensely exciting work and the Quintet iteration maintains the drama of the loud passages while capturing a delicate, intimate sound in the softer moments. Having played many reduced/stripped back arrangements, this is one that is bound to work exceptionally.

Anton plays a beautiful double bass, built in around 1880 in the Markneukirchen region of Germany.
