Sarah Hill started the foundation year at St Martins School of Art when she was 16 years old and went on to do theatre design at the Central School of Art.

"There I found a piano under the stage which rekindled my initial desire to study music, changed direction, and studied piano and double bass at the Royal College of Music before joining the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s double bass section. I left in order to freelance in London. During this time I also started playing a full-size concert harp, and for ten years I played annually in a garden in the mountains of Japan, four recitals a day. Then I came back to Scotland.

Painting was always ongoing, and when I retired from playing the double bass I spent three years at Leith School of Art.

I now combine a passion for painting with music. Just as sound is composed to create music, I aim to compose with paint, to capture the energy and movement of musicians, the sea and everyday life.

I call myself a musician who paints."
